When everyone else is wearing 1776 shirts in July your friends might ask what 1847 is all about. You can tell them it commemorates the time when fleeing Latter-day Saints found refuge in the mountain west, that later became Utah. July 24th 1847 is the day Brigham Young emerged from Emigration Canyon, looked out at the Salt Lake Valley declared, “This is the right place, drive on.”

Or you can just tell them, it's a Utah holiday. 😉
