A survival thriller novel by Mike Barham

Many Are Called: The Lion of Deseret is a gripping tale of faith, courage, and survival set in a brutal post-collapse America. For fathers who feel kinship with the Saints who built the Intermountain West and settled Utah’s valleys, this novel rekindles the pioneer spirit in a thrilling, action-packed journey to Deseret.

Kyler, a battle-hardened former soldier, survives in the ruins of Phoenix, a city overrun by chaos and controlled by violent cartels. But when a chance encounter leads him to rescue a pair of sisters and a doctor—fellow Saints clinging to faith in a fallen world—he sets out on an impossible journey. Together, they must navigate the dangers of cartel-controlled territory, cross a hostile Navajo Nation, and evade ambush on lawless desert roads, all in pursuit of reaching the Nation of Deseret—a beacon of order, faith, and safety in the wilderness.

But a promised land doesn’t stand unchallenged. As Kyler joins Deseret’s defenders, he faces a grim reality: the borderlands are rife with dangers, and securing Deseret’s perimeter demands more than brute force. It will test his faith, resilience, and capacity to inspire others to stand firm against overwhelming odds. Can Kyler find his place among the faithful and forge a life of purpose in the face of relentless threats?

From the publisher, 40º Degrees North Press

Many Are Called: The Lion of Deseret speaks to the heart of every Latter-day Saint who admires the grit and faith of the pioneers who built Zion in the wilderness. This novel combines action, suspense, and heartfelt moments of reflection to create a narrative that will resonate deeply with fathers who want to inspire their sons with timeless lessons of courage, sacrifice, and the power of belief.

Packed with themes of self-reliance, loyalty, and the pursuit of spiritual refuge, this is a story for those who honor the legacy of the Saints who once crossed plains and mountains to find a place to live their faith.

Rated PG-13 for violence and adult themes

We hope this book offers a chance for fathers to discuss important values like faith, morality, valor, resilience, and readiness with their sons, but there's no rating system for books the way there is for movies, but PG-13 was the author and editor's goal, given the subject matter.

This book explores gritty post-collapse conflicts and the struggles of civilians against criminals and abusers. It deals with themes of protection and the aftermath of heavy subjects, making it more suitable for mature readers.

This book is fiction

While the author has sought to create a believable, near-future world, this is in no way  an attempt to foretell the future of the the cities where it takes place, or the Kingdom of God on the earth. This book is not about the future of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it's about characters compelled to find unity, peace, and solidarity with others of their faith. Any likeness to real individuals is merely coincidental.
