Nauvoo was originally a city named Commerce, Illinois until the early Latter-day Saint settlers bought the place and named it Nauvoo. Technically the city was established in 1840, but since the Saints arrived in 1839, that's the year we put on the shirt.

Why the American buffalo? The buffalo is symbol of the American west, and was very prevalent at the time. And it's a cool visual. But, the buffalo, like the early Latter-day Saints were systemically pushed from land to land by the forces shaping America.
