Nauvoo, Illinois was originally a city named Commerce until the early Latter-day Saint settlers bought the place and named it Nauvoo, a Hebrew word that means “beautiful.” Technically the city was officially established in 1840, but since the Saints arrived there in 1839, that's the year we put on the shirt, because were edgy like that. Nauvoo represents a bold period in Church history, and is also reflected in the deepening persecution of the Saints. Why the American buffalo? Just because it’s a symbol of the American west.
