About the authors

Dallin H. Oaks wrote this work as an attorney, jurist, and legal scholar (including service as a professor and later as president of Brigham Young University). He has been a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1984. This volume reflects his earlier career in law and history, not later ecclesiastical office.

Marvin S. Hill (1928–2016) was a professor of history at Brigham Young University and the author of Quest for Refuge, among other works in Mormon and American history.
